Scynime - Scene 0

----------------------------------------
The year is 3099 and man-kind is at an impasse. For generations, we were blinded by our own self-important pride, believing that the universe rotated around us, that the earth would continue to sustain us and we were the masters of our own fate. We were naive. We paid dearly for losing our innocence.
Historical documentation is riddled with inconsistences but I will try my best to piece together the events that lead to our current state. At some point in the mid-21st century, we developed cerebral mapping that allowed us to ‘virtualize’ the human brain. One of the first pilots transferred a group of leading minds into a robotic craft and hurl it towards the nearest inhabitable star system. Next, we began using the robotic captures to colonize neighboring planets. The Mars Unification Corps was the crowning achievement of human progress. The process, created for science, became a ‘pop-culture’ phenomenon. At first, only the rich could afford to transfer their consciousness into these segregates. But human greed coupled with the fantasy of immortality massed produced these ‘housings’ on borrowed time. Corporations built empires that could supply any fantasy as long as you were willing to pay in years. My records all elude to the sharp decline in ingenuity and moral standing but these are not something that I can prove with hard numbers.
But the Days of Black Sun was recorded. Historians once theorized that if humanity were to ever meet another sentient species that either they or we would subjugate the other. They assumed this from historical records of man-kinds bloody past. They were not wrong. The Virtual Ingenuity Exploration Probe never made it to the far off system. It was intercepted by the Drej. From what little we can gather before the invasion, the Drej are a nomadic species that are largely comprised of conductive fibers that allow them to interact with electricity the same way we would wool. Their technology was more advanced but only one ‘circuit’ or ‘tribe’ caught the probe. If we were any larger of a target, humanity may have been wiped out forever.
The Drej raided without warning. Our defenses were geared towards ourselves; they were little use against an interstellar threat. Our communications were breached and the ‘world wide web’ became our greatest enemy. The Earth was freely being scoured for any resource that the Drej wanted. But we fought back. All the years of war and fighting and tenacity were used to form a resistance, a much stouter fight than the invaders had anticipated. The Day of Black Sun noted a micro-fiber mesh that unfolded from smaller ships deployed from the Drej’s ‘mother ship’. The net was large enough to cover the sun facing side of our planet. It started to drop the temperature of our planet, sending us into a makeshift Ice Age as till enough of us died so the rest could be brought into slavery and the planet raped for the rest of its usefulness.
Historical records are sketchy on how the next series of events unfolded. It was the M.U.C. that came to the Earth’s aid. How or where they found the technology is a mystery. But they had found a way to cross space and attack the Drej with craft with warships that could rend through their hulls and cleave through their force shielding. The attack force routed the Drej and sent them scattering. The battle was not without injury. The battle craft that the M.U.C. was infected with the virus-like re-writing that doomed Earth’s communications. The construct dismantled, separated and vanished towards opposite ends of the universe.
The years following were harsh. The Earth had to recover from the ravages of war, an imposed Ice Age and generations of hedonism. The Mars Unification Corps prospered though. Their limited number compensated by constructing more and more advanced robotics. They were able to provide Earth with a workforce to rebuild what had been destroyed, though many of the natural resources were still gone. The destroyed Drej ship was seized and restored to the best of human understanding. There is a notable advance in technology indicated here as humanity rushed to catch up with interstellar capabilities before another threat rose.
It is unclear if it was a dormant Drej infection or if it was faulty programming… or even something unexplainable, the Ghost in the Shell theory. The empire that the MUC had literally built turned on humanity. The Machine Wars started quietly. A set of murders here, a revolt there as pockets of robots and constructs became self-aware. Just as Earth started to recover from one war, it was thrown into another. The battle front was mainly on Mars but Earth and Venus had the same complications out of their work force. Terrorist like attacks launched by the droids left people marred or mutated, their programming aimed specifically at reducing human moral.
It was a brilliant scientist whose name has been lost who found a solution. Using the Drej technology, she was able to send a series of electromagnetic pulse waves planet side. The blasts were large enough to blanket continents at a time. These blasts were strong enough to cause even living beings to black out for hours but were non-fatal. The rebelling robots were forcefully shut down- removing whatever force was that were sending them in their murderous attacks. It was a bitter resolution. The blasts also wiped out many of the historical records that were intact after the Drej attack. We theorize this is why the Drej did not use such a method to begin with. The MUC declined being subjected to the treatment. The populous were almost entirely comprised of virtual presence, having lived hundreds of years within their cybernetic housing. The planet sized EMP burst would mean suicide for their planet. Till this very day, the empire of MUC is riddled with uncertainty as the Ghost could strike at any time.
This is close to where we are now. Earth resources are scarese and without a knowledge base to rebuild. The MUC is a crumbling empire where only metal copies of humanity can survive. We do not know about Venus, there has not been communications received in years. None of our missionaries have ever returned from planet side. If humanity is to survive, we have to find a new start. We have to find a home to reestablish ourselves so we can fix the mess that our universe has become.
That is why we have ordered the Drej ship to be over-hauled. It will be a vessal that we will leave our homeland in search of a place we can call home. We have collected as much technology and knowledge from the Earth, from the MUC and what was left by the Drej. The ship was christened Genesis. It holds humanities last hope to survive.

End Scene 0
You can play any character that can be on the ship, Genesis, to begin with. There will be a lot of opportunity to change your character as the game progresses (see Scynime Epic: Character Creation) for more details.
